A few weeks ago was my nephew's first birthday.
I was tasked with making the smash cake and cupcakes to the tune of woodland creatures.
Naturally, I opted for a totes adorable Tree Stump Smash Cake and Antler Cupcakes.
The Tree Stump Smash Cake was a perfect fit and one of the easiest cakes I've ever made!

The Tree Stump Smash Cake started with two, 5" cakes, that I baked in these Fat Daddio's Cake Pans.
The cakes were super tall so I cut them down with this handy Cake Slicer Leveler, which also works to cut bread. I highly recommend it for cutting cakes horizontally; it works beautifully.
I ended up with a three-layer cake and in between the layers Chocolate Buttercream.
The outside of this woodsy cake was the same chocolate buttercream frosting as in between the cake layers.
The cake doesn't have to be frosted neat or smooth since it is supposed to represent tree bark. Giving it a rougher frosting look makes it more authentic looking.
I used a cake decorating comb on the top of the cake to signify the tree's rings.
To give this woodland cake an extra oomph, the top of the cake was lightly sprinkled with chocolate sprinkles and these too cute forest animal babies were placed on top.
The animals were a hit with my nephew; they helped give him the nudge to dig into the cake!
For the sides of the Tree Stump Smash Cake, I used a bamboo skewer and dug lines into the frosting to make it look like bark.
There wasn't a whole lot of rhyme or reason to my bark lines; I just kinda went with it. It turned out quite nice, IMO. 😉
The Tree Stump Smash Cake was a HUGE success! My nephew LOVED the chocolate frosting!!
