Roaring 20s Dirty 30 Birthday Mini Cupcakes – a look into my sister’s roaring 20s dirty 30 birthday party and the 5 flavors of 250 mini cupcakes that I made in celebration of her big 3-0!
Last month was my sister’s 30th birthday. She had a spectacular Roaring 20s Dirty 30 Birthday Party. All the gents and dolls wore 20s attire as we said goodbye to her 20s and welcomed her into her dirty 30s. The party was a big success with a lot of really fun 20s attire.
As the sister of the birthday girl, I had several tasks under my belt; the first being the creation of the invitations. The colors of the event were gold, black, and white. I created this postcard invitation with the help of Vistaprint. It turned out perfect for the event and my sis was very happy with the results.
In addition to the invites I also made a video of my sister through the years with family and friends. The video was a slideshow of photos that lasted a 30 minutes and played on a loop all evening.
I was really touched making and watching the video. It’s amazing to see the joys of someone’s life throughout the years. I teared up a bit. I feel everyone should have a video like this; it’s a nice keepsake. It also provides good laughs, the hair and clothes, LOVE it!
Next on my party planning agenda was the signage. I put a bit of my graphic design skills to use and created a few prohibition signs to put around the venue, as well as signage for the photo booth and bathroom. I also made a sign for the dessert table to describe the FIVE different mini cupcake flavors.
You can see a bit of the signage on the dessert table, photo by my sister-in-law, Krystle Lois Photography. If you would like to download any of these signs for your own roaring 20s party, I have PDF printable’s for you: prohibition, photo booth, and bathroom basket.
And now on to the good stuff, Roaring 20s Dirty 30 Birthday Mini Cupcakes. This was of course my favorite contribution to the party. I made 250 mini cupcakes that were displayed on cake plates my sister made via Dollar Store candlestick holders and plates super glued together. It worked brilliantly and really tied the dessert table into the theme.
I used these fabulous black mini cupcake liners that I purchased from Country Kitchen Sweet Art. If you’ve ever purchased cupcake liners that you hate for one reason or another, for me – seeing the cake through the liner – I would highly recommend this vendor and these liners. You’ll love them!
I baked five different flavors of mini cupcakes and then decorated each cupcake flavor differently to differentiate them. I made a little sign, Sarah’s Bake Studio Presents, to describe each flavor.
The Five Mini Cupcake Flavors
Banana Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream, a favorite of the birthday girl. This recipe utilizes the popular Very Banana Cupcakes recipe and a delicious NEW Vanilla Buttercream recipe that I will be sharing with you real soon. I piped a little blob of frosting on with my trusty #1A round decorating tip, and decorated with adult Emily edible images.
I purchased the 1.25” circle edible images from Sugar Art Edibles on Etsy; totally fabulous and would order from again!
Vanilla Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream, is my personal favorite. These cupcakes were distinguished with child Emily edible images, and yes I ate FIVE of these mini cupcakes that night. Shhh, don’t tell. 😉
Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream and topped with black dark chocolate mustaches. I used two different chocolate molds, Bakerella Playful Shapes and another mustache mold that doesn't seem to be available anymore. I purchased Clasen Black Dark Chocolate Wafers for a pure dark black. I made all the chocolate cupcake toppers three days prior to the event and stored them in an airtight container.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Buttercream, the fan favorite. My original Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Cupcakes' recipe is a standard size cupcake and used Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures. These mini cupcakes were stuffed with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Minis. I topped these mini cupcakes with black and white chocolate 30s. I used a 30 chocolate mold purchased from Fondant Source, and Ghirardelli White Chocolate Wafers and Clasen Black Dark Chocolate Wafers.
Snickerdoodle Cupcakes, also one of my favorites. This mini cupcake was decorated with Cinnamon Buttercream and topped off with gold pearlized sugar! I also used gold pearlized sugar to distinguish mystery flavor cupcakes. If you ate a gold pearlized sugar mini cupcake you got either a Snickerdoodle Cupcake OR one of the above mentioned flavors.
Traveling with 250 mini cupcakes posed as a challenge so I ended up purchasing mini cupcake containers from the Webstaurant Store. The containers worked great for transporting, but where a bit of a bitch when it came to taking the cupcakes out. Some of the cupcakes got a bit smudged as I removed them. That being said, I would still recommend them for pure transportation ease AND I ♥ the Webstaurant Store!
So there you have it, my sister’s Roaring 20s Dirty 30 Birthday Party. It was a blast and I loved every role I played in it {I ♥ event planning!}, most of all celebrating my sister's BIG 3-0! Cheers to the Dirty 30s! 🙂
What is your favorite themed cupcake that you’ve ever made or would like to make?

I did a Spiderman and Batman theme for my lil man years ago. We went all out including the cupcake decorations.

Ooh, Spiderman and Batman cupcakes sound fun! I don't have any little men to make this type of cupcake for yet, but when I do I could see some fun ideas there! Thanks for stopping by and sharing!
