Game Day Football Cupcakes – dark chocolate football almonds adorning the lush buttercream grass of your favorite chocolate cupcake; a step-by-step guide and video tutorial to creating this perfect game day treat.
Are you ready for the Super Bowl? You’re going to need some delicious Game Day Eats! These Game Day Football Cupcakes are a must have for Super Bowl Sunday with their Dark Chocolate Football Almonds right along the 50,40,30,20,10 yard line of the lush green American Buttercream grass of a football field cupcake.
These Game Day Football Cupcakes taste as good as they look, but this post isn’t about the chocolate cake, it’s about the decorations on the cupcake. Game Day Football Cupcake inspiration, right here!
For these cupcakes I used my favorite Betty Crocker Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix. You should use your favorite chocolate cake recipe, whether that is a boxed cake mix or from scratch. I wanted to focus on my favorite part, decorating, so I went with an easy and favorite boxed cake mix.
Supplies for Game Day Football Cupcakes
- Dark Chocolate Football Almonds
- American Buttercream
- Americolor Soft Gel Paste - Leaf Green
- Pastry Bags
- Decorating Tip #233 {grass}
- Decorating Tip #3 {yard lines}
To decorate your Game Day Football Cupcakes I've provided step-by-step instructions and a video tutorial.
Step 1 | The Grass
Making grass is a cinch with decorating tip #233, the grass tip. Start at the edge or middle of your cupcake, holding your piping bag at a 90 degree-ish angle hover just above the cupcake and squeeze with a gentle even pressure; releasing pressure as you pull away. The longer you squeeze as you are pulling away, the longer your grass will be. Work your way around the cupcake until the entire top is grass covered.
Step 2 | The Yard Lines and Numbers
Once you have your cupcakes all covered in grass, you’ll be piping the white yard lines and numbers on with decorating tip #3, a round tip. Starting at the top middle of your cupcake, holding your piping bag at a 90 degree-ish angle squeeze with a gentle even pressure drawing a vertical “yard line” down your cupcake; release pressure when you complete your line and then pull up with the pastry bag. You don’t want to press down onto your cupcake or you’ll mess up your grass.
The yard line numbers consist of 50, 40, 30, 20, and 10. Pipe one number on each side of the line. Use the same pressure as you did with the yard lines. Writing with frosting requires a steady hand, and can be one of the most difficult aspects of cake decorating. It will come with practice, practice, practice.
Step 3 | The Football
You’re just going to plop a Dark Chocolate Football Almond right next to the yard line. If your frosting has dried and won’t “stick” to your cupcake, put a little buttercream on the back of your almond and then press onto cupcake.
You’ll be the MVP of your Super Bowl party with these Game Day Football Cupcakes! Touchdown! 🙂
