I have been so bad with blog posts the last week-or-so. It's not that I haven't been baking; I've got cupcakes and cookies coming out of my ears. It's also not because I don't have awesome recipes that I want to share with all of you {remember said cupcakes and cookies coming out of my ears}.
It’s that I went away on a much-needed jaunt to WI Dells with my hubby for a little rest and relaxation. It was a wonderful time away filled with sweet treats, good eats, soaks in the whirlpool tub, mini-golf, and time with my {dare I say} neglected husband. It was a delightfully, carefree trip that I was sad to see end.
Unfortunately, this trip also left me neglecting my wonderful readers. And so I say, I am soo very sorry. This kind of thing is bound to happen, but I am really trying to keep it to a minimum.
In light of my recent neglect, I would like to shower you with a delicious chocolate recipe...Chocolate American Buttercream.
This Chocolate American Buttercream is perfect for frosting your favorite cake or cupcake recipe. It is also great to lick off a spatula or your Kitchenaid paddle attachment - not that anyone is doing that. 😉
My Chocolate American Buttercream recipe is the ‘American’ version of buttercream in that it uses a combo of both butter and vegetable shortening. I am partial to this method as it holds up well in heat and is great for decorating purposes.
If you’re looking for delicious vanilla buttercream, let me suggest my very favorite Vanilla Buttercream. It’s my go-to vanilla buttercream recipe and is the base for my cinnamon buttercream. It’s a fab alternative for the non-chocoholics.
A delicious Chocolate American Buttercream is a must for any recipe box. You won’t be able to resist its chocolaty flavor. Plus it goes well with countless recipes: Chocolate 3 Musketeers Cupcakes and Very Banana Cupcakes {just to name a few}.

Chocolate American Buttercream
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and ½ tablespoons vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 lbs powdered sugar
- 7 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- In a large bowl using an electric mixer, cream butter and shortening until creamy and smooth. Add cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt; mix until combined.
- Slowly add powdered sugar 1 cup at a time; beating well after each addition. Scrape down bowl as necessary.
- Once all powdered sugar has been mixed in, add 1 tablespoon of milk at a time and mix. Continue to add and mix until desired consistency is achieved. Eat & Enjoy!
